What is a grease trap?
A Grease Trap (also known as grease interceptors, grease recovery devices and grease converters) is a plumbing device designed to intercept most greases and solids before they enter a wastewater disposal system.
Grease Traps are used to reduce the amount of fats, oils and greases (FOGs) that enter the main sewers.
Effectively they are boxes within the drain run that flows between the sink in a kitchen to the sewer system. They only have kitchen waste water flowing through them and are not served by any other drainage system such as toilets.
They can be made from a number of different materials; e.g. stainless steel, plastic, concrete & cast iron ranging from a 35 litre capacity upwards.
Location of a Grease Trap can be above ground, below ground, inside the kitchen or outside the building.
Why is cleaning your grease trap important?
Disposing properly of used fats and oils is very important. If you don’t, they can cause expensive problems later. Fats will become solid and eventually block your pipes requiring a plumber to clear.
AVOID COSTLY REPAIRS!
Cleaning the trap should be done regularly – once a month is usually alright but it will depend on your type of business and how much fat is going into the grease trap. Three months would be the maximum.
We service many clients within the South Canterbury area, and are able to assist you with information for local council bylaws in this area.
What happens to the waste from the grease traps?
We recycle it where we can. If that cannot be done, we dump at the approved site for processing which is the Timaru District Council Milliscreen.

Interceptor Cleaning
Interceptors are designed to trap & hold oil and grit from lightly contaminated runoff, allowing the water to flow into the sewer.
To remain effective, it is the Occupiers responsibility to ensure sumps/interceptors receive regular maintenance & remain in a good working order.
This is to eliminate all sediments and or surface contaminants, preventing them from entering into the local sewer system. Frequency of empty will depend on the nature of your business.
