Septic Tanks

Many homes, especially baches and rural properties, are not able to connect to a town sewage system. These properties have their own on-site disposal systems. The most common form of on-site disposal system is a septic tank.

How do septic tanks work?

Wastewater from the kitchen, laundry and bathroom discharges into a septic tank buried on the property. The heavier solids settle to the bottom of the tank, while suspended solids float to the top. The remaining liquid flows out of the tank and discharges into a soakage area (either a dispersal or evaporation field).

A septic tank has a rodding eye or access point just before the sewer line from the house where it enters the tank (also known as a “mushroom”). If there is waste coming out of this point it is a good indication the tank is full or the amenities (toilets) are blocked or flowing out of the gully trap.

Septic Tank Maintenance Saves You Money!

A poorly maintained septic tank will over time become a serious health hazard, spreading disease and contaminating water sources.

Septic Tank Pumping

Septic tanks generally need pumping (cleaning out) every 3-5 years to remove sludge and sediment.

The frequency depends on:

  • What goes into the system
  • How many people use it
  • The capacity of the tables
  • Whether you recycle grey water

Holding Tanks (Grey Water Tanks)

Holding Tanks sit above the ground and store the Greywater from your property.

Greywater is the waste water from basins, baths & showers. Although cleaner than septic tank liquids, Grey Water MUST NOT be stored for extended periods of time in the tank and is essential that it is emptied entirely every time.

Frequency of empty depends on the extent of Greywater dispersed. This is determined by the number of occupants at the property, water usage and the size of the Holding Tank.

If you are unsure of how to tell if your tank needs to be emptied, contact the team today on 0800-800-594.

Cesspits & Soak Holes

Cesspits and soak holes are small catchment/drains used to divert surface flooding. Commonly, cesspits tend to block up due to excess silt, debris, rubbish and leaves.

We can either use a vacuum loader to suck out and remove the material in the cesspit, or flush a cesspit with the Hydro Jetter to clear it.

Soak holes are prevalent where there are few or no standard storm water lines available and are primarily designed to disperse storm water and excess rain water from a cess pit.

Often they can be defective due to an excessive build-up of silt and therefore this inhibits ground leaching.
